The ABCs of Teaching Reading to Adult ESOL Learners

This session will give an overview of the components of teaching reading to our ESOL learners. The presentation will review research on the topic and discuss what this means for the teaching of reading. Practical suggestions will be shared.
Jill is a gifted teacher and former ESOL curriculum coordinator at CLC.
Assessment in the Adult ESOL Classroom

In this workshop we will discuss a variety of assessments that can be used in an adult ESOL classroom. We will discuss how to assess students who are coming into your group or class, and how to prepare them for the formal assessments required. We will practice using a picture survey, questionnaire and interview for newer students. We will also discuss using the BEST Station in the classroom. This tool can be used to prepare students for the BEST test and to help them work on basic life skills that all students need to know. Materials will be provided to help keep records of student progress easily and concisely.

Dealing With a "Tense" Situation: Gaining Control of Verbs in English by Focusing on Form, Function, and Use (ESOL Levels 1-5)

In the first part of the workshop, we will analyze typical verb errors ESL students make and investigate ways to better help them gain control over this difficult area of grammar. The next part of the workshop will showcase activities for practicing form, function, and use. Attendees will be provided with handouts to use with their own students. The final 20 minutes will be open for questions and answers.

- Show why irregular verbs are the most common and important verbs; and why we should learn their present, past & perfect forms together.
- Examine why "phrasal verbs" are fun and easy to learn.
- Simplify how and when to use the verb "DO".

Uncovering and Addressing Critical Obstacles to Learning (BL 1-5)

Most literacy students, both native English speakers and ESOL, have several major hurdles to becoming successful learners. Join this two part session to:
- Learn how to administer 5 key screenings that can uncover underlying learning issues.
- Learn how to help students select critical interventions that can break their illiteracy and open them up to more successful and productive learning experiences at CLC.
This session will lead to volunteer tutors being certified as a PowerPath's Basic Screener.
