Opportunities to Volunteer

The Council offers many different volunteer opportunities; there is something for everybody who wants to help our cause. If you are interested in volunteering, submit a registration form or contact Kathleen Lantz at klantz@columbusliteracy.org.

Basic Literacy Tutoring
As a basic literacy tutor you can work one-on-one or with a small group of adults. You will help them learn the skills to live independently in a world filled with print - complete a job application, use a checking account, follow road signs, and experience the joy of reading information for pleasure.

ESOL Tutoring
As an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) tutor you can work one-on-one with a student, or with a group of students. You will help a non-English speaking adult overcome the language barrier and adjust to a new life. You need not know the other language; the Council will train you to teach English conversation, reading, and writing.

Teacher
As a teacher, you will work with a team of other volunteers to lead a Basic Literacy or an ESOL class. The Council provides the curriculum but you will be responsible for creating lesson plans and activities to help your students learn.

Classroom Assistant
As a classroom assistant, you will be assigned to a Basic Literacy or ESOL class to help and engage the students so they can get the most out of their classes.

Media Center Volunteer
As a volunteer in our Media Center, you will work one-on-one with students to help them learn basic computer skills. You will also help them use computer software and internet websites to learn and practice English.

Office Support
As an office volunteer, you can work with Student Services to perform duties such as student intake and orientation, or you can work in other areas such as fund-raising, promotional activities and other administrative assistance.

Special skills
If you are interested in volunteering and have special skills such as public speaking, marketing, writing, or graphic design then let us know. We need help in many areas and you might be able to provide it.
